18th Century Oil on Board of Roman Ruins

18th Century Oil on Board of Roman Ruins: Oil on board painting depicting Roman ruins with people in the foreground as well as in the grotto. The board has hand saw marks rather than machine marks. Unsigned but well rendered. Probably late18th, possibly early 19th century. Dimensions are: image - 19" wide x 13 3/4" high, overall - 26 1/2" wide x 21 1/4" high. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Surface has darkened with age. Some in-painting to sky, mostly above Villa(about 3" X 3 1/2"). There is also about a 1" square area of in-painting to the grass at far left of the Villa. Lower left corner was repaired when the frame was made. Mid-20th century from Mickelsons. Provenance: Estate of Major Gen. andMrs. James Gavan
